The Favourite Sounds Site
On this site you can listen to sounds and soundscapes recorded at specific locations by clicking markers on the Google map. Most are single sounds but some are linked as sequences, during which the map locations automatically change in play.
The core of the recordings were originally made for the Favourite Sounds Project. This started as a program for London's ResonanceFM in 1998 and has continued in other world cities since. The project asks as many people as possible the seemingly simple question, "What is your favourite sound of London... Beijing... Prague..., and why?" The responses have been fascinating, revealing both the city of the ear and how people feel about the everyday soundscapes in which they live and work.
The site will add more existing and future favourite sounds, but we intend to include other projects and recordings simply because they are great to listen to.
The site is still in development, so apologies for the inevitable bugs and errors.
Site structure
Many, but not all, sounds are grouped by 'project', usually covering a specific geographical area.
Selecting a 'project' zooms to the relevant sounds/sequences and hides the rest.
'Tags' and 'Recordists' search the selected 'project' in more detail.
Project 'All' shows every sound and enables 'tags' and 'recordists' to search the whole database.
'ABOUT' gives info on the selected project.
Many thanks to Nigel Currie and Kirsten Edwards for all the programming and visual design.
A special acknowledgement is owed to Udo Noll and radio aporee for his pioneering sound mapping.
The site has been developed with the kind assistance of the the Midland Arts Centre, Birmingham
